Welcome to Rosemary Cottage

The cottage is situated on the east coast of the Isle of Harris, set in a quarter acre off the main road with no near neighbours. There are breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and it is within a five minute walk of the sea. Harris is the most scenic of the Hebridean Islands. The cottage is in the village of Drinishader, ten minutes from Tarbert and the ferry, on the Golden Road.

The village has a Post Office and shop. Though it keeps regular post office times, the owners are prepared to open the shop if you knock on the house door outside of these times. The shop has basic provisions. Bread is freshly baked to order, the eggs are free range and locally produced. There is also fresh home baking occasionally available.

If you would like a basket of provisions delivered just prior to your arrival please contact Jayne Porteous on 01859 502379 or email

The coast line on the east side of the island is very rugged. However, in contrast the west coast and its white sandy beaches are only a twenty minute car ride away.

The wild flowers bloom from spring through the summer.

The house is ideally situated for surfing, diving, canoeing, cycling, walking, whale and bird watching, exploring the other islands, boat trips, fishing, game, rock and boat fishing; otters and seals abound.

Well behaved pets welcomed. However, please bear in mind that this is sheep country.

Collect mussels from the various coves, winkles from the beach at Seilebost or meet the day boats arriving at the harbour in Stocinis between 17.00hrs and 18.00hrs daily for langoustines. The locals are very helpful in pointing you in the right direction for crabs, lobsters, fresh fish and scallops.
